Sam and Nancy Shewmaker went to Africa as missionaries in 1967. They taught in a Christian School in Zambia and later did church planting in rural areas of southern Zambia and urban ministry in capital city of Lusaka.

Their three children were born in Zambia. In 1986, the Shewmakers moved to Nairobi, Kenya where they planted a church in a middleclass suburb. From 1993-2000, Sam and Nancy taught in the Nairobi Great Commission School, Sam served as an elder in the Rainbow Church of Christ and they did seminars on church leadership and missions in several countries across the continent. Since 1992, he has also worked with Africans Claiming Africa for Christ, a movement to mobilize African churches in missions.
From 2000 to 2005, Sam and Nancy lived in Searcy, AR where Sam taught missions at Harding University and trained and placed students in mission internships in Africa and Asia with a view to raising up long-term missionaries.
The Shewmakers now work with Missions Resource Network, in Bedford, TX where Sam works as Africa facilitator for Church Planting. Sam and Nancy expect to move their base of operations to Rwanda in September 2007 in order to facilitate the development of multi-cultural mission teams for the continent of Africa.
